In August 2022 Newquay, the surf capital of the UK, played host to a festival that has become the go-to party of the summer for Britain's A-level and GCSE-weary teens. Founded in 1981 as a surfing competition, Boardmasters expanded into a music festival in 2005 and today welcomes about 50,000 revellers over five days. The Cornish town is consumed by the festival and strains at the influx. The tumult is tolerated as local businesses can fill the winter war chest.
